A loaf and well

During our first lockdown in Belgium, in the spring of 2020, seeking to stay at home as much as possible, I picked up a new skill: bread baking. I’d never done it before, and had assumed it must be difficult and time-consuming. Of course, it’s no such thing – after all, bread-baking is one of humanity’s most universal and basic skills. Hi folks 👋 been taking a bit of a social media break, screw the algorithm frankly! Anyway everyone needs a bit of bitterness in their diets if not their lives, and here in Belgium they have a taste for the bitter leaves. Endive lettuces are popular to grow at this time of year, and here are some given to me by a nice old bloke at the allotment. Netted as the pigeons like them. Good in a mixed green salad or with potatoes and something salty to soften the bitterness (here they add lardons but I prefer a meat-free version). Treated myself to two new books 📚 🌹 A gift of rose hips from an allotmenteer. So what shall I make with these then? Syrup, jelly, tea….or any other ideas? 😜 Ten o’clock at night, travelling tomorrow and blanching French beans for freezing. Green gardening at its best: a ripening chilli from a seed from my local seed swap group growing in a repurposed olive oil tin filled with garden compost 💚 ⏰ Now’s the moment: while herbs are still fresh in the garden, grab a few bunches to save for winter. My valiant OH rescued this poor crow from drowning in an open barrel of water near our allotment. Birdie spent the night in the greenhouse protected from predators and flew off this morning to live another day! In my blog post today for #sixonsaturday: 🌞Am so glad I discovered Tithonias - Mexican sunflowers - which unlike true sunflowers are much easier to keep away from our slimy friends!
