Vegtastic Six on Saturday

It looks like this is going to go down as one of the driest summers in Europe – so far, I say with trepidation. Despite the lack of rain, the allotment harvests have been incredible. I can hardly keep up with processing all this food in the kitchen. It’s hard work, of the old-fashioned sort, but I haven’t had to go out and buy fruit … Continue reading Vegtastic Six on Saturday

I wasn’t at Chelsea Flower Show this year but I did pick up some inspiration from this garden in Quimper, in Brittany, France. Just green, simplicity, water and geometry. Jardin de la Retraite. How bold is too bold? I do like vibrant plants - here are Dutches irises and geums in my vibrant border. No pastels allowed! Caring for nature in cities. This is Quimper, France. Great initiative from the town you would think, to plant fruit trees and insect-friendly ground cover in containers until more permanent plantings are made. But swipe to see what people do with it 😢 Walls don’t need to be boring. Am in Quimper, Brittany, where the walls are bursting with plants: what I think is pennywort (Umbilicus rupestris), Mexican fleabane, Campanula, ivy-leaves toadflax…just gorgeous! I taught a border design workshop on Saturday and it went really well - much helped by glorious sunshine. I just loved the designs the participants came up with - swipe to see them. Always helpful to have a fresh pair of eyes analyse your garden - they see things you don’t and spot new opportunities. The zingy colours have arrived! Allium ‘Purple Sensation, Geum ‘Scarlet Tempest’ and Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ are energising the borders! I was feeling a bit fed up and the rain didn’t help, but seems that the veg love it - radishes, broad beans, rhubarb and potatoes all growing away happily! Upsides… Final set of RHS exams coming up in June - phew! Am hopelessly behind with my studying but am finding it helpful to condense the huge amount of info to learn on veg into simple diagrams - and now you know the correct planting distances for cabbages 😂 Found this little kitchen cabinet given for free on our street. Makes the perfect shelving unit for the greenhouse at the allotment and a nice spot for tea 🙂
